The 25th Annual Future Problem Solving Program State Conference took place at E. O. Smith High School, Mansfield, CT, on March 28-29, 2008.  The Future Problem Solving Program is an advanced level, highly rigorous academic competition. To qualify for competition, students researched and analyzed issues connected to Neurotechnology.   Their research helped them to examine challenges connected to medical breakthroughs, ethics issues, and cognitive liberty.   They then used Dr. E. Paul Torrance’s Creative Problem Solving process to solve related problems set in the future.

In the Middle Division, grades 7- 9, eighth graders Jordan Sabin Tierney Morton, Taylor Vann, and Meghan Fowler won 2nd place in team competition.  As a first year team in a field of 38 mostly experienced teams statewide, these students were one of only 14 teams to qualify for State Conference.  The team was required to problem solve issues related to Debt in Developing Countries during the competition.

In the Middle Division, grades 7- 9, eighth grader Jordan Sabin has won the State Future Problem Solving Scenario Writing Championship, and he will represent the State of Connecticut at the FPS International Competition in Michigan this June. Jordan’s scenario, “Couples” focused on issues related to cybernetics. Jordan and the entire FPS team is coached by parent Lisa Thomas.

Portals to Our Past                                                                                                                                       TOP OF PAGE

Killingly Historical Society is one of several locations around northeast Connecticut to receive painted wood panels depicting the history of the “Last Green Valley.” “Portals to our Past” is the traveling display that has been created by students and teachers from Windham Middle School and Captain Nathan Hale School in Coventry. Scott Rhoades and Al Scopino work with CNH students on this project.

The schools have been working on the project since September 2006, after a suggestion by the Educational Director of the Mill Museum, Bev York. Donna Young, a history teacher at Windham Middle School, said the Children’s Department of Willimantic had been doing projects with Bev before this project was recommended. While libraries and historical societies have been suggested locations for the panels, they are available to the general public, as well. “[ The panels are available to] anyone that feels they can use them as a teaching purpose,” said Young.

Roughly 75 students, between the two schools, have collaborated on the project that focuses on various points of the region including recreational activities and famous people. When the project is complete, a total of nine panels will have been created on doors donated by Willard’s in Willimantic

The teachers have been working with history students to create brochures that will accompany the panels. The purpose of the brochures is to give more in depth information regarding each panel and what it represents.

The brochures have been funded by the Last Green Valley organization, and the panels will be on display at its annual meeting in May. The project has been a collaborative effort between the art departments and history departments for both schools. The project has given the students involved the opportunity to not only learn more about the region they live in, but also to meet students from the other school.

The schools came together for two field trips, where students interacted with one another and learned more about the “Last Green Valley.”
